Have You Seen This Early Immortal?

Chessorb Classic, Issue #127 -- GOTM #97

Chessorb Classic
A lot of people know of Adolf Anderssen's Immortal Game. This and the Evergreen Game were two of the most celebrated masterpieces of the infamous German maestro.

More than 60 years earlier a game whose echo could be heard in Anderssen's stunning effort was played also in London. It demonstrated many similar ideas to Anderssen's Immortal. Speed of development and finding good posts for mobile pieces was again the order of the day.

The same strategy of offering tempting gifts for the opponent in exchange for a developmental lead was used here. The idea that a piece sacrificed would be much more influential to the eventual outcome than a statue that would never be captured but would never move.

This month's game was played in London in 1788. Thomas Bowdler had White and Henry Seymour Conway had Black.
