LCB, Issue #137 --, Decline the Queen's Gambit with the Tartakower November 01, 2026 |
Decline the Queen's Gambit with the TartakowerChessorb Classic, Issue #137 -- GOTM #107 Chessorb Classic The Tartakower is a very popular way to play the Queen's Gambit Declined as Black. You get a solid position without any problems. White has to play well to gain the initiative. You will look for a chance to play ...c5 and free up some space. You will be looking for ...Ne4 to trade off dark square Bishops at your earliest convenience. With less space you need to get pieces off the board to relieve the pressure. How do you get on top with White? Try to stop the ...c5 advance. Black will still be solid but he will be passive and less able to mount any threats. If he gets in ...c5, you can leave him with hanging pawns. You may be able to induce weaknesses by constantly harassing and attacking these pawns. We can go to the Game of the Century to see one of these in the wild. This is a game from the famous World Championship in Reykjavik, Iceland in 1972. Bobby Fischer had the White pieces. He was of course facing Boris Spassky playing with Black. Fischer, Robert - Spassky, Boris [D59] P.S.
